Sophia K. Apple M.D. is a Chief of Breast Pathology and Professor who has served on the UCLA School of Medicine faculty since she joined the Department of Pathology in 2002. She has published over 50 original articles, numerous abstracts, and book chapters in the topic of breast cancer. She is an author of the leading textbook titled "The Breast Imaging" through Elsevier Publisher. She is a national and international speaker in breast pathology.She currently serves on the editorial board of 5 medical journals.Dr. Apple received her M.D. at Wright State University Medical Center in 1992. She received her Masters degree in Biochemistry at New York University and earned her B.S. in Biochemistry at New York University. She was trained in her anatomical and clinical pathology residency and Cytopathology fellowship at UCLA.

Breast Pathology

David Y. Lu, M.D., is an assistant professor in the UCLA Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. His clinical and research interests are in breast pathology, cytopathology, and genitourinary pathology. Dr. Lu also helps run the UCLA Department of Pathology Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Clinic, which is located in the 100 Med Plaza building. The clinic offers easy-to-schedule palpation- and ultrasound-guided FNAs of superficial lesions of the breasts, head and neck, thyroid, as well as other body sites. Dr. Lu received his M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2005. He completed anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Emory University in 2009. He then pursued fellowship training in cytopathology and surgical pathology at UCLA.

Neda Moatamed, M.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She completed her pathology residency and fellowship at USC Medical Center followed by Women’s health fellowship training at UCLA. She is currently practicing surgical pathology with focused specialization in breast, gynecologic pathology, and cytopathology at UCLA.

Peggy Sullivan, MD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, received her M.D. from the Keck USC School of Medicine. She completed her residency, cytopathology fellowship, and Women’s Health fellowship at UCLA. Her research and clinical interests are devoted to cytopathology and surgical pathology including gynecologic and breast pathology.
